ASUU SEEKS BILL TO BAR CHILDREN OF POLITICIANS FROM FOREIGN EDUCATION

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is advocating for the creation of a bill that would govern the process by which the children of public servants enrol in schools located outside of Nigeria. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state, Monday, threatened to stop paying the salaries of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Benue State University, BSU, branch if they fail to call off the ongoing sympathy strike with the national body. Striking Academic Staff Union of Universities and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities on Sunday said the Federal Government had yet to reach out to them since the Nigeria Labour Congress announced plan to hold nationwide solidarity protests on Tuesday and Wednesday. 2022 UTME: INSTITUTIONS CONSIDERED TO DETERMINE ADMISSION DEADLINE

Tertiary institutions have been allowed to determine the deadline for the 2022 admissions due to the status of 2021 admissions. The decision was reached at the end the 2022 Policy meeting and 2020 National Tertiary Admissions Performance-Merit Award programme organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja. Speaking in an interview with newsmen, some Vice Chancellors suggested that each university should be made to determine the closing date for the 2022 admissions into the institution, giving opportunities for universities yet to conclude 2021 admissions to end the process. JAMB ANNOUNCES 2022/23 ADMISSION CUT-OFF MARKS

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, (JAMB), after a meeting with heads of tertiary institutions in the country, has pegged the cut-off mark for admissions in the 2022/2023 academic session. The cut-off marks for universities is 140, polytechnics 100 and colleges of education-100. The cut off marks were made known at the ongoing Policy Meeting on Admissions presided over by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, in Abuja . JAMB’s registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, who announced the cut-off marks after deliberations by vice chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics and provosts of colleges of education, said the implication was that every institution had the right to fix its own cut-off mark even up to 220 but no one would be allowed to go less than the agreed minimum marks of 100 for colleges of education, 100 for polytechnics and 140 for universities. ASUU STRIKE: NLC FIXES DATE FOR NATIONWIDE PROTEST

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has revolved to protest on Tuesday and Wednesday next week over the continued closure of the public universities in Nigeria. This came as it faulted the Federal Government purported rejection of the Nimi-Briggs Committee on the premise of alleged disparity between the pay rise allocated to academic and non-academic staff of universities. ASUU: REACH MIDDLE GROUND WITH GOVT, YOUTH MINISTER PLEADS WITH LECTURERS

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Chief Sunday Dare, has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities to make compromises, so as to resolve the current nationwide strike by varsity lecturers. SHEHU SANI GIVES SUGGESTION ON HOW TO END ASUU STRIKE

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has suggested a way to end the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. Sani said money spent on politics in Nigeria can easily meet the demands of ASUU. ASUU had been on strike since February 2022 over the Federal Government’s inability to meet a 2019 agreement. The Federal Government had refused to allow ASUU to use their own generated payment platform, University Transparency Accountability Solution, UTAS, among other demands. Amid the prolonged strike, President Muhammadu Buhari had urged ASUU to call off its industrial action. WAEC BEGINS MARKING EXAM SCRIPTS FOR 2022 WASSCE

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has commenced marking of examination scripts for the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The board will also host coordination meetings for chief examiners and team leaders today. According to WAEC Nigeria, marking of examination scripts will take at 85 venues in Nigeria. This, the board explained, will foster the practice of releasing candidates’ results 45 days after the conduct of the last paper.
