The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions have suspended strike. Daily Trust reports that the unions went on strike in March, few weeks after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) down tools. In a chat with our correspondent on Saturday, President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, said the strike had been suspended for two months. He said the unions took the action to give room for the federal government to implement all the agreements reached. ”We have only suspended the strike for 60 days. This is just to open a window for the federal government to fulfill all its agreements with us. We will resume the strike after 60 days if the government fails on its promises,” Comrade Ibrahim told Daily Trust. He said the suspension of the strike will take effect on Wednesday, August 24.

Fresh facts have emerged on why the Academic Staff Union of Universities rejected the proposal by the Federal Government. The PUNCH had earlier reported that ASUU had tagged the offer by the Federal Government as “miserable”. However, the union did not go into some of the details in the proposal. But the zonal coordinator, Port Harcourt zone, Stanley Ogoun, in a statement made available to The PUNCH noted that the Federal Government noted that it would increase the salaries of professors by N60,000 while other lecturers would have their salaries increased within the range of N30,000 and N60,000. The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Thursday said it would not call off its strike until the salary arrears of its members were paid. The university lecturers also said they would not teach students to make up for the six months they had been on strike if the Federal Government failed to pay for the “period of strike.” The union’s national president, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this to The PUNCH in response to a statement by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, that the Federal Government would not concede to ASUU’s demands for the backlog of salaries withheld within the period. THE Federal Government on Thursday insisted that it will not succumb to the demand by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, for their members to be paid the six months salaries withheld over the ongoing strike, saying it is meant to be the penalty for their needless action.
