ACCOUNTANT-GENERAL’S ARREST JUSTIFIES OUR OPPOSITION TO IPPIS – ASUU(DETAILS)

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said the arrest and detention of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, over alleged N80bn fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has justified the union’s opposition to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, stating it is a conduit.

According to the union, IPPIS is allegedly being used to render Nigerian workers poorer and expose them to more poverty amidst the country’s rich resources.

This was contained in a statement titled, ‘ASUU has been vindicated over opposition to IPPIS’, issued on Sunday by the chairman of ASUU, Federal University, Otuoke.

The statement read in part, “The arrest and detention of the Accountant-General of the Federation has exposed to Nigerians what ASUU has always known that IPPIS has always been a conduit pipe that a heartless government mafia has been using to milk the country dry and oppress the long-suffering, hapless, poverty-damaged Nigerian workers.

“It is sad that Nigerian workers have continued to groan under government oppression in a country that is endowed with abundance of every gift of nature one can think of.

“It is sad enough that Nigerian lecturers are paid next to nothing. On top of that, the IPPIS mafia in government still steals from that meagre salary in the name of all manner of fraudulent and arbitrary deductions.

“Why is it difficult for Nigeria to produce a single world class university while lesser endowed countries like Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Namibia and South Africa boast of far better equipped universities?

“We thank the government for finally remembering to pay some lecturers their minimum wage arrears after three good years but what crime have lecturers committed that the government had maliciously withheld their salary for three months under the present unpleasant economy?

“So, the government shamelessly wants to punish lecturers for demanding that the government should make our universities better?

“Is it an offence to urge the government to develop and improve education? Why is the government bent on starving lecturers to submission? Why is the government bent on punishing us with starvation? Is the country not hard enough already?”

The PUNCH had reported that the EFCC had on May 16, announced the arrest of Idris over alleged diversion and laundering of N80bn.

It also reported that the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, through a letter dated May 18, 2022, suspended Idris without pay in order to “allow for proper and unhindered investigation” in line with public service rules, following his arrest.

STRIKE : MOUAU-ASUU REJECTS FG’s NEW SALARY STRUCTURE FOR LECTURERS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia has described the Federal Government’s Consolidated Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) as “unilateral”, hence unacceptable. The group’s position is contained in a statement jointly issued by the Chairman and Secretary of the union, Michael Ugwuene and Paul Nwiyi, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Saturday. The statement is entitled, “Failure of Government: Collective bargaining agreement is the way forward.” It stated that CONUASS awarded increases of 35 per cent and 25 per cent of current salaries to Professors at bar, and other ranks, respectively. It argued that the review was prepared by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission and presented to the Prof. Nimi-Briggs-led FG/ASUU Renegotiation Committee, without inputs from ASUU. “The crux of this matter is that the award is unilateral and a total breach of the provisions...

STRIKE: FG BEGS ASUU TO ACCEPT IPPIS

The federal government has begged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to accept the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS) with the promise of improving the payment platform to fit the needs of the lecturers. The Accountant General of the Federation, Sylvia Okolieaboh, made the plea on Thursday during the meeting between the union and the federal government at the House of Representatives. Recall that the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila had last week called for an extended meeting of all stakeholders in the education sector to resolve the over seven months strike. The Accountant General said the government will accommodate the union on the issue of salaries in a bid to end the strike. He insisted that the government is concerned over the ripple effect of allowing ASUU to have a separate payment platform from others. “If there are peculiarities in the university salaries system, what we need to do is to sit down with ASUU and identify...
