DESPITE ASUU STRIKE EXTENSION, FG SET TO REOPEN VARSITIES

There are indications that despite the insistence of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to continue its lingering strike, the Federal Government is set to reopen its shut universities.

According to sources in the Federal Ministry of Education, the academic staff are not the only set of workers in the university system and since non-academic staff are ready to go back to work, the universities should no longer be shut.

“Moreover, there are some lecturers who are also ready to work, suck people should not be shut out. Only few days ago, a group addressed the press in Abuja, saying they are not part of the ASUU trouble. Their group is also working to be registered too.

“Non-teaching staff have also called off their strike and the university environment is not only for or about academic staff. Why should those who are ready to work be denied the opportunity to work? He asked.

This is just as a meeting of Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of federal universities have been slated for next Tuesday at the National Universities Commission, NUC, Complex, Abuja.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia has described the Federal Government’s Consolidated Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) as “unilateral”, hence unacceptable. The group’s position is contained in a statement jointly issued by the Chairman and Secretary of the union, Michael Ugwuene and Paul Nwiyi, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Saturday. The statement is entitled, “Failure of Government: Collective bargaining agreement is the way forward.” It stated that CONUASS awarded increases of 35 per cent and 25 per cent of current salaries to Professors at bar, and other ranks, respectively. OBASEKI CAN'T BAN UNION ACTIVITIES IN AAU –ASUU

The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, on Wednesday, said the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, had no constitutional right to proscribe union activities in the state-owned institution, Ambrose Alli University. The ASUU president, who disclosed this when he led other national delegates of the union in solidarity protest to the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, over their unpaid salaries and other sundry issues, said ASUU is a registered body that had the right to operate in the country.
