ASUU STRIKE: STAKEHOLDERS WORRIED OVER STUDENTS’ CURRENT ACADEMIC STATE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) recently called off its eight-month protracted strike but some parents, public commentators and others have expressed anxiety over the students’ long stay at home, noting that the strike had disrupted academic arrangements and impacted on the students negatively. Professor Godwin Jireh, a theologian, parent and public affairs commentator, lamented that it was unfortunate that the Federal Government allowed the industrial action to last for eight months. He said the Federal Government did not seem sensitive about the future of university education in the nation and the plights of students, the nation’s future leaders. JAMB HASN'T CANCELLED ANY ADMISSION

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, announced yesterday that no admissions to universities, polytechnics, or institutes of education had been suspended or postponed as a result of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU’s, protracted strike. Professor Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, said this prior to opening the National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, in Abuja. Prof. Oloyede, among others, stated, “The responsibility for admitting students lies with the respective schools.” JAMB is a centre for coordination. The management of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) has announced the resumption date for the continuation of academic activities for the first semester, 2021/2022 academic session. At a Special Meeting convened on Tuesday, 25th October, 2022, the Senate of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, approved Monday, 7th November, 2022 as the date for the resumption of academic activity in the University. According to the Senate’s approved Academic Calendar, lectures for the First Semester 2021/2022 Academic Session will resume on Monday, November 7,2022. RIVERS VARSITY BANS INDECENT DRESSING

The Rivers State University management has announced a ban on “indecent dressing” within the school campus. This was revealed in an internal memorandum signed by the its Registrar and Secretary to the Senate, Dr S. C. Enyindah, dated October 19, 2022, which was acquired by our correspondent. ASUU STRIKE: OUR COLLEAGUES RETURNING WITH UNWANTED PREGNANCIES — STUDENTS CLAIM

As campuses reopened after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called off its eight-month-old strike, some students have told our correspondent that some of their colleagues are returning to school with unwanted pregnancies. It was gathered that some of the students, who came to Enugu to do some vocational jobs, including sales, were impregnated by their bosses. Apart from those who secured temporary jobs, some of the students who were allegedly lonely at home, fell into the traps of neighbours and became pregnant. It was further learnt that some of the female students who were frustrated by the protracted strike went into unplanned marriages and got pregnant. A female student, who identified herself as Ifeoma Agu said she knows many of her girlfriends that are going back to school with different months of pregnancies.

KWARA POLY HOLDS 28TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY, GRADUATES 7,781 STUDENTS

The Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin has graduated 7,781 National Diploma and Higher National Diploma students during the 2021/2022 session, the rector of the Institution, Dr. Abdul-Jimoh Mohammed, has disclosed. Speaking at the 28th convocation ceremony held on the institution’s campus, Mohammed said that the Institution is presently offering 56 programmes including HND Mass Communication which has been approved by the National Board for Technical Education. He added that additional facilities have been acquired for HND Animal Production programme as requested by the Board. He also stated that the polytechnic students would be more entrepreneurial to make them relevant in the industries. WE DID NOT SIGN AGREEMENT WITH FG TO CALL OFF STRIKE — ASUU REVEALS

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disclosed that no agreement was signed with the federal government before calling off the eight month strike. The President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this on Monday during a meeting with the leadership of the House of Representatives. It would be recalled that the Appeal Court had affirmed the ruling of the National Industrial Court that asked the union to return to school. However, before the ruling by the court, the House had brokered some agreements between the union and the executive. In the meeting, Mr Osodeke said the lecturers acted in good faith by calling off the strike without any written agreement. “The strike we called off, our members did it based on trust in us and the way the speaker has intervened—three meetings now—it was on that basis we were able to convince them. “What we agreed on the issue of IPPIS and UTAS is a temporary measure. STRIKE: GBAJABIAMILA MOVES TO CONSOLIDATE ASUU, GOVERNMENT AGREEMENT ON PAYMENT PLATFORM

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila has reiterated the determination of the House to ensure the implementation of the latest agreement between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government to eliminate the possibility of another industrial action by the union.  This emerged on Monday during a reconciliation meeting convened by Speaker Gbajabiamila between the leadership of ASUU and the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) where the Speaker emphasized that everything must be done to prevent lecturers from resuming the suspended strike action.  While thanking the ASUU leadership and the striking lecturers for returning to class based on trust from the intervention of the House, Gbajabiamila said the purpose of the days meeting was to strike an understanding between ASUU and the AGF on the implementation of the agreement to accommodate the peculiarities of lecturers into the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information Sys
