LAUTECH SHUNS ASUU STRIKE, RESUMES LECTURE(DETAILS)

The management of Ladoke Akintola university has resume its teaching activities in the school today 31st of May 2022. This was following the circular which the school released some weeks ago stating the resumption of the academic activities back in the school, even though the chairman of ASUU, LAUTECH chapter debunked the news. Recall that Academic staff union of universities ASUU started the strike on feb. and thus hasn’t suspend the strike till now. ASUU earlier disclosed that they have resumed talks with the Federal government and hope that they will finalise an agreement next week to suspend the ongoing strike which has caused many controversial comments on the Nigerian educational sector. Our correspondent earlier reported that the school has shunned ASUU orders and begin its academic activities. One of the students who spoke with our correspondent said that not all departments has resumed fully but said lectures have commenced for some departments.

The Federal Government yesterday, commended the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) for calling off its warning strike and resuming duties. The Government also lauded the union for acknowledging the efforts of the Federal Government towards the resolution of the challenges facing polytechnic education in the country. NECO EXTENDS 2022 REGISTRATION DEADLINE(DETAILS)

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has extended the registration period for the 2022 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for school-based candidates. NECO’s Head of Information and Public Relations Division, Azeez Sani, announced this in a statement on Monday.According to him, the council has decided to extend the registration deadline for the examination for this year by three weeks. The registration period which was initially scheduled to close on May 30 has now been extended to the midnight of June 20. NECO informed the Ministries of Education, principals, commandants, and other stakeholders in various states and the Federal Capital that there would be no further extension after this. It revealed that the 2022 NECO SSCE would commence on June 27 and last till August 12, adding that candidates would be examined in 76 subjects during the examination.

STRIKE: WE HAVE RESUMED TALKS WITH FG – ASUU, SSANU(DETAILS)

Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have said the Prof Nimi Briggs Committee is in negotiation with the unions. Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday, the ASUU’s National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union had been negotiating with the Briggs Committee since last week over its demands. ASUU commenced its ongoing strike on February 14, 2022 after the Federal Government failed to meet some of its demands namely; the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution payment platform. ASUP SUSPENDS WARNING STRIKE, ANNOUNCES RESUMPTION DATE(DETAILS)

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) has directed its members to resume work on Monday May 30, 2022 following the expiration of its two- week strike. The union said it took the decision following some progress made with the Federal Government regarding its demands. ASUP, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Abdullahi Yalwa disclosed that the government had met four of its demands. It said the decision to resume work was to give the federal government more time to meet the remaining five demands. The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said that despite the non-payment of salaries to its members, the union remains undaunted in its struggle for a better university system. Speaking to our correspondent on Friday, the Chairman of the union’s branch at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Dr. Adeola Egbedokun, confirmed to The PUNCH that the Federal Government stopped paying the salaries of striking lecturers since March 2022. Dr. Egbedokun said, “The last time they paid us was February. Since March, they stopped paying the salaries.” Another lecturer at the institution also confirmed the non-payment of the salaries. Speaking further, Dr. Egbedokun said, “We’re used to it. ASUU STRIKE: EX-MINISTER, LECTURERS DISAGREE OVER VARSITIES’ FINANCIAL AUTONOMY(DETAILS)

The former minister of Education,Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, and some education experts have disagreed over financial autonomy for the nation’s universities. While Nwajiuba, in an interview with The PUNCH, stressed the need to grant public universities financial autonomy, the two experts, in separate interviews, said the government cannot absolve itself of its duty of funding education. Elder Statesman Edwin Clark says there is a need for the Minister of Education Adamu Adamu to take over negotiations regarding the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike. This was contained in a circular by the University of Lagos branch of the union titled, ‘Payment of minimum wage arrears’. The chairman of UNILAG ASUU, Dele Ashiru, confirmed the authenticity of the circular to The PUNCH on Saturday. Ashiru described the arrears payment as “long-overdue”, saying that the core demands of ASUU have not been met. The Federal Government has commenced the payment of minimum wage arrears, which it owed lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and Academic Staff Union of Universities as part of efforts to end ongoing strikes by the unions, The PUNCH has learnt. SOLDIERS DISRUPT OAU STUDENTS PROTEST ON HIGHWAY(DETAILS)

Soldiers have disrupted the protest by students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Osun State over ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The protesters mounted barricades on two lanes of the Ife/Ilesha/ Akure expressway. The barricades mounted close to the Oduduwa University roundabout and Moro end of the expressway caused a girdlock on the busy highway. The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Anderson Ezeibe, on Tuesday, said if the Federal Government fails to meet the union’s demands by June, it may declare indefinite strike action. Anderson said the National Executive Council would meet in June after the expiration of the union’s two-week warning strike and may declare a total strike. The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday told the immediate past Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, to face his presidential campaigns and stop interfering in the union’s issues. This is as university students, angered by the Federal Government’s failure to resolve the impasse with ASUU, vow to continue protests to draw the government’s attention to their plight.
