WHAT FG MUST DO TO END STRIKE — ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has outlined steps the government must take to end its six-month-long academic strike. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the government must exhibit transparency. “Government should tell us and Nigerians – the money that has been alleged to have been approved for revitalisation – how much is it and where is it lodged? When will it be released?” Prof Osodeke said. The university don added that the government must clearly state its position on the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), a payroll system which ASUU wants as a replacement for the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS). “Three, have they accepted the agreement we reached with their panel? They should come and tell us this, and not go to the press,” Prof. Osodeke said. The ASUU President accused the Federal Government of appealing to sensibilities rather than solving the i

STRIKE: FG HAVE MET ALL ASUU's DEMANDS, EDUCATION MINISTER INSIST

Minister of State for Education, Rt Hon Goodluck Opiah, speaking during his presentation to the Senate Committee (Tertiary Institutions and TetFund) on the Oversight Function of the Ministry of Education, insisted that Goverment has met all the demands of the Union. He noted that it would not be out of place for major stakeholders in governance, like the members of the National Assembly, to leverage what the government has done so far to see if the striking lecturers could go back to classes. Opiah said the Federal Government has done the necessary things for ASUU to resume classes, adding that major stakeholders like the federal lawmakers can also come into the matter. He averred that in contrast to the wrong impression being held about the posit

There are indications that despite the insistence of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to continue its lingering strike, the Federal Government is set to reopen its shut universities. According to sources in the Federal Ministry of Education, the academic staff are not the only set of workers in the university system and since non-academic staff are ready to go back to work, the universities should no longer be shut. “Moreover, there are some lecturers who are also ready to work, suck people should not be shut out. Only few days ago, a group addressed the press in Abuja, saying they are not part of the ASUU trouble. Their group is also working to be registered too. “Non-teaching staff have also called off their strike and the university environment is not only for or about academic staff. Why should those who are ready to work be denied the opportunity to work? He asked. This is just as a meeting of Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of federal universities

STRIKE : NAS BACKS ASUU, BLASTS FG OVER DISDAIN FOR EDUCATION

The National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) has blamed Federal Government’s disdain for education as the cause for the prolonged industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). It has therefore demanded that the Federal Government puts its act together and take immediate steps to resolve the impasse by acceding to the demands of the union. The NAS Capoon, Mr. Abiola Owoaje in a statement entitled ‘‘FG’s Hollow Hubris Prolonging ASUU Strike’ described the arrogant stand of the Federal Government as “ill-conceived, reckless and insensitive to the plight of students, parents, the university system and Nigeria as a country.” While noting that the Federal Government has demonstrated insincerity in its talks with ASUU over the years accused President Muhammadu Buhari of being uninterested. “President Muhammadu Buhari’s aloofness to critical issues such as the ASUU strike is disappointing. STRIKE : MOUAU-ASUU REJECTS FG’s NEW SALARY STRUCTURE FOR LECTURERS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia has described the Federal Government’s Consolidated Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) as “unilateral”, hence unacceptable. The statement is entitled, “Failure of Government: Collective bargaining agreement is the way forward.” It stated that CONUASS awarded increases of 35 per cent and 25 per cent of current salaries to Professors at bar, and other ranks, respectively. It argued that the review was prepared by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission and presented to the Prof. Nimi-Briggs-led FG/ASUU Renegotiation Committee, without inputs from ASUU. “The crux of this matter is that the award is unilateral and a total breach of the provisions

The attention of the Management of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti (EKSU) has been drawn to the interview granted the Arise Television by the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Emmanuel Osodeke where he mentioned some state-owned universities in Nigeria as quacks and irrelevant. In the same press interview with Dr. Reuben Abati, he listed some first generation universities as the ones that matter most in the ongoing struggle by ASUU. The Management of EKSU views this denigrating remark about some universities, coming from the National President of ASUU as unfortunate, reckless and unwarranted. Apart from the above, the university (EKSU) has nearly all its academic programmes accre

INDEFINITE STRIKE: OUR MEMBERS WILL DECIDE NEXT STEP - ASUU PRESIDENT

President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has debunked media reports that his members have decided to embark on indefinite strike beginning from next week.   Prof. Osodeke, asked Nigerians to disregard a document on social media that indicated that ASUU chapters voted for indefinite strike except a particular university in Niger state.   He, however, confirmed that members from all chapters of ASUU have been invited for a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting next week. “It’s at that meeting that they would all vote and decide on the next line of action as regards the six months strike.”   He maintained that ASUU, at national level, don’t impose decisions on all the chapters, rather, they present matters to them for critical deliberation and decision on what is good for them and other members, considering their peculiarities.   On August 1st, 2022,  ASUU announced an extension of its ongoing nationwide strike by four weeks to,
