FG MAKES FRESH OFFER , ASUU INSISTS ON UTAS

The House of Representatives, on Thursday, concluded its meetings with stakeholders over the lingering crisis between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, saying its recommendations would soon be presented to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). At the third of the series of marathon meetings held in Abuja, the government’s side urged ASUU to allow their accommodation under the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System. The ASUU side, however, insisted on an independent and domesticated platform for university lecturers, challenging the National Information Technology Development Agency to prove that the University Transparency Accountability Solution recommended by it failed the integrity test. The invited parties appeared before the House on Thursday, with the representatives of the government making a fresh offer to ASUU to allow a modification of the IPPIS to accommodate the peculiarities UTAS seeks to recognis...

ASUU STRIKE: WE WILL MAKE NEXT FEW WEEKS UGLY FOR POLITICIANS, NANS VOWS

The leadership of the Lagos axis of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to disrupt political campaigns and make the coming weeks ugly for Nigerian politicians until the Federal Government puts an end to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).  The chairman of Lagos axis of NANS, Olusesi Tolulope, told The Guardian yesterday that resolving the strike has already become an ego fight between the Federal Government and ASUU, saying students were the ones paying the price. He said the students were at the receiving end of their inability to resolve all issues around the seven-month, warning that if the ruling of the National Industrial Court, which ordered the lecturers back to work was not complied with, and the Federal Government also refuses to do the needful, the society would be sitting on a time bomb. The ATBU SUG president, Comrade Usman Abubakar was speaking at a press conference organized by a NorthEast zone of NANS in Bauchi on Friday. He lamented that the strike would deny students who are close to the age of 30 from experiencing NYSC because of the law that bars graduates who are over 30 years from participating in the scheme. “The federal government and ASUU are clearly not thinking about how this strike will have direct impact of the lives of students. Most people whose ages is close to 30 are at the risk of not going for NYSC. “Even those who might scale through to NYSC will also be denied job opportunities because by the time they graduate, they will be older than the 26 or 27 years that ba...

The NLC urged the Minister to direct the registrar of trade unions “not to be used to execute an obnoxious plot against Nigerian workers especially our lecturers in the universities.” NLC said the plot was to deliberately frustrate ASUU from submitting its audited financial report in line with the request of the minister, in order to find an excuse to go after its registration. Giving his thoughts on the court ruling the Senior Advocate of Nigeria said, “If the government listens to ASUU all the strikes are avoidable.” “It is about funding… in 1992, ASUU convinced the government that employers of labour should pay education tax because those trained by the government are employed by employers.” The 64-year-old ...
