Kwara State Government has directed the re-opening of the College of Education Ilorin following five weeks of shutdown.The closure of the school followed a recent rampage and destruction of some public facilities by some students. We hereby announce the reopening of the school with immediate effect. The executive members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), led by its President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, is scheduled to meet and discuss the inability of the Federal Government to meet their demands.  ASUU NEC is also expected to deliberate on the half salary paid to its members by the Federal Government last month. The meeting is expected to cause palpable tension among university communities.  The meeting will take place at the union’s headquarters at the permanent site of the University of Abuja campus. Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities in Ekiti, Osun and Ondo states on Wednesday held peaceful protests against the pro-rata salary they received in October as well as the no-work, no-pay salary policy of the Federal Government. The union embarked on a strike action on Monday, February 14, 2022, to protest the non-implementation of the 2009 Memorandum of Understanding reached with it by the Federal Government among other issues. However, after calling off the strike, the government only paid them for half of October. The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti chapter, Dr Kayode Arogundade, accused the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and the Ministers of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, and Education, Adamu Adamu, of nursing negative agenda for education. The Covenant University has debunked allegations that female students of the school are being sexually harassed and raped by workers of the intuition. PUNCH Metro gathered that people had been accusing some workers of sexually harassing and raping female undergraduates of the institution. Lamenting over the incident on social media, a man, while using his Instagram handle, @_Otitoo, called for urgent intervention to prevent a situation that would lead to the death of a student. Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has told the Federal Government that if it insists on a no-work, no-pay policy, lecturers would abandon backlogs of academic activities caused by its over seven months strike. The union argued that the policy should not apply to them because they had picked up from where they left seven months ago, stressing that they were clearing the backlogs of work in a combined two sessions. The union made the demands during a special congress and protest rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers state yesterday. The lecturers, mainly from the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport), after emerging from the congress, protested the half-salary payment. The final year students of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State will not graduate this year following the disagreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities over the pro-rata payment of salaries. This follows the failure of the government to pay the striking lecturers their withheld eight months salaries. Though the university conducted examinations for students of the 2020/2021 session following the strike, the lecturers had decided not to mark the scripts. “Members of ASUU will not mark the current examination scripts. The Federal Government has appointed Mrs Christy Uba as overseer of the National Youth Service Corps. Her appointment followed the sacking of Brigadier General M.K Fadah by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). According to a statement signed by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, on Tuesday, the NYSC said Uba took over the leadership of the corps, being the most senior director in the scheme. “Mrs Uba will serve in the capacity of an Overseer, pending the appointment of a substantive Director General by Mr President,” the statement added.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Niger Delta University chapter, on Monday, staged a peaceful solidarity protest in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, against what it described as the casualisation of university lecturers and bastardisation of tertiary education in Nigeria by the government.
